In his first ad of the general election, the Republican nominee for Senate and current Missouri Attorney General, Eric Schmitt made several false and misleading claims about Joe Biden, Democratic nominee Trudy Busch-Valentine, and the current state of the American economy.
Claim: "Biden shut down American energy production."
Fact: This claim made by several other prominent Republicans was fact-checked by Politifact. In their report, they found that since Biden took office, oil production has actually risen on both federal and private lands. In fact, domestic oil production in 2021 almost hit a record high. Additionally, no president has the power to affect oil drilling on private lands.
Claim: "Trudy Busch Valentine endorsed Biden's wasteful spending that created this inflation crisis."
Fact: The recent rise in inflation does not have one single cause. While some experts have said that federal spending such as the American Rescue Plan has had an impact on inflation, it is not the sole culprit. Marc Goldwein with the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget writing for Politifact said, "With no American Rescue Plan, we would still have inflation above the Federal Reserve’s target of 2% to 3%". Other factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic's disruption to the labor market and supply chains, past government spending, and the Russian war in Ukraine are all responsible for the rise in inflation. To lay all the blame for inflation on Joe Biden is misleading and untrue, as well as ignores all the positive aspects of the American Rescue Plan.
